Two closely related, adjoining but independent communities are known as Cross Lake.

One is located on the Cross Lake Indian Reserve, and the other is on nearby provincial crown land. The information in this report relates to the non-treaty community unless noted.

The community is located about 520 kilometres by air north of Winnipeg, and 120 kilometres by air south of Thompson. It is situated on the shores of the Nelson River where the river enters Cross Lake.
